Just came back from a great weekend’s diving in Coron with the guys at DiveCal. Diving was really spectacular and offered great variety. Did 3 of the Japanese WWII wrecks on the saturday and then the phenomenal Barracuda Lake and 7 islands marine park on sunday. Barracuda Lake really is a must-see – there is so much unique about it. It has distinct layers of salt and fresh water and 30 metre visibility. There are huge temperature differentials (10deg celcius) due to it being hot spring-fed, and bizarrely a couple of really big saltwater fish – I didn’t see the barracuda that gives the lake its name but a very inquisitive lone big jackfish followed us around. The walls of the lake are spectacular limestone cliffs and the bottom is so fine that you can swim head-first into the sand, which makes for a crazy photo. All in all, an unforgettable dive!
We were really well looked after by the dive master Bjorn and rest of the crew, while Martha from DiveLink provided great company and much entertainment above and below water. The boats, adaptations of the local banana boat design, were really spacious and made for a comfortable experience overall. Would highly recommend a trip to Coron to anyone, and the relaxed friendliness of DiveCal is definitely a good bet, plus they offer the best rates in town. I’m already planning to come back and dive Apo on their live-aboard.
Only advice to DiveCal is that it may be a good idea for to start investing in some new equipment as some of it looks pretty old. It will definitely help to attract more discerning customers.
After having a look at most of the dive centres in Coron, we liked the look and price of Divecal, and John the friendly Zimbo got us onto a boat the next day. We spent a full day exploring the Calamian islands, had a delicious lunch and dived two wrecks. It was great to have Divemaster Asa with us, she had extensive knowledge of the area, including lots of history of the WWII ships. A colourful sunset was the perfect end to an amazing day. Thanks Divecal for the memories!
