Here are some useful hints on using the site, especially for non standard items, so I will be adding to this.  If you want something explained, please add a comment and I will see what I can do!  See also our ‘How To’ page.

Profile Pics There is a bug in the pic uploader and it does not set the correct Unix permissions so there may be a delay in displaying until I use FTP to set them!

Picture Pages To view pics individually just click on the thumbnail.  You can move backward and forward by using the >> and << buttons underneath the Pic.  You can also download the Pic by right clicking and selecting ‘Save As’.  There are two type of slideshow – ‘Slideshow’ and ‘Piclens’ so you can select which works best in your browser. Both methods have a full screen option by clicking the square mini-button.  You can add some or all Pics from our pages to your post by clicking on the  ‘Add NextGen Gallery’ button, top row, far right.

Interactive Video When you post you can click the Interactive Video (Red) tag.  This allows you to capture video from your Webcam NOW and insert the clip  into your post.  It also allows you to add clips from YouTube, MySpace and other places.  Click ‘Add Interactive Video’ (red)  to start or ‘Browse’  to see what’s here.  There is also a simple, but nifty, editor. Be patient if you have a slow connection!  It also has simple editing features
Fast Insert (below post)   Useful as it gives access to Blog and Nextgen libraries without you having to know the URL as well as Upload functions.  Pics are posted as visible pics,  but Sound and Video files in a ‘Link’ which are displayed in an appropriate viewer when the reader clicks the link.
Insert/Edit embedded media This works reliably and has a choice of 5 players,  but you need to provide the URL.  It also displays YouTube, Google Mqaps etc.If you want more flexibility than Fast Insert gives click HTML and cut and paste the URL from the ‘Fast Insert’ link.  This, ‘Insert/Edit Image’,  ‘Add NextGen Gallery’ and ‘Insert RSS Feed’  are on the TinyMCE Top Row, far right, before the ‘Full Screen’, ‘Show/Hide Kitchen Sink’ (which shows/hides the technical second row’ and the ‘Help’ icon.

Embed YouTube into Posts Insert the YouTube URL and then add one of the following letter(s) after http:
httpv:// – regular video;   httpvh:// – high quality;  httpvhd:// – HD quality;   httpvp:// – playlist

Post your own Map. You can add your own map into your post.  The syntax is here:-

Categories and Tags.   You can assign your post to a Category (otherwise called ‘Unassigned’) and add Tags when you post.  This helps others search and find it.  Links to posts or Pages which match these are highlighted in purple text on all Posts and Pages.  Unsassigned Posts may be assigned by me if they contain content useful to others. 
Automatic Tag Suggester.  At bottom of page ‘Click Tags.’ to show range of Tags.  Click ‘Local’ for suggestions from this site..  If you want to use one (or more) of these click on it once and Update Page.

Private Messages You can send Private Messages to other Users by clicking the item under ‘Users’.  If you have a message waiting for you a notice is posted at the top of the Dashboard.

Notice to Users:

By default we give all new users ‘Author’ privilege’s. This allows you more easily to upload useful articles and other content beyond just the ordinary Post abilities.  However, unfortunately, experience shows that  some people abuse this, such as posting off-topic stuff.  If so I will down-grade their privileges and if necessary block offending users. – Trevor.
